Art, my most dear Charles,
             art.
Let me tell you how I live here:
             apart.

Cloistered in the palace like a prince,
for matters of print,
I am the Empress’ only groom;

I read her Paris papers,
novels, the odd poem ...

when the evening is spread out against the sky,
can we visit the temples together, ishoni?

They light them up each night, and I would like to see
the golden and the silver pavilions,
perched upon their lakes;
the karesansui at Ryoanji...
